Speaking to reporters in Ilorin, the state’s police commissioner, Adekimi Ojo, explained that Badru is facing charges of forgery, obtaining money under false pretence, and criminal breach of trust.
According to the police, the incident dates back to 2023 when Badru allegedly approached his victim, Joseph Olugbenga, presenting himself as a well-connected politician with strong links to influential figures.
He is said to have promised Olugbenga a position on the board of the South West Development Commission in exchange for N300 million.
It was gathered that Olugbenga paid the money in instalments, believing his promise to facilitate his appointment into the SWDC.
Once the payments were completed, Badru allegedly disappeared, relocated to Ibadan in Oyo State, and cut off all communication with the victim.
“Subsequently, the suspect blocked all communication channels, preventing the complainant from reaching him.
“Upon receipt of the petition, operatives of the Criminal Investigation Department swung into action and traced the suspect to his hideout in Ibadan, Oyo State, where he was arrested.
“During interrogation, the suspect voluntarily admitted to the crime. The command is carrying out further investigation, and at the conclusion of our findings, the suspect will be duly charged in court,” police said.
The command urged members of the public to be wary of fraudsters parading themselves as political powerbrokers, noting that no genuine appointment process requires such payments.
