Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has criticized Kano Pillars fans for attacking players, officials, and staff of Shooting Stars Sports Club after Sunday’s Nigeria Premier Football League match at Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.

The incident followed a dramatic 94th-minute equalizer by Shooting Stars’ Adams Mustapha, which cancelled out an earlier goal by Kano Pillars’ Mustapha Jibrin, leaving the game tied 1–1.

Video footage from the live broadcast by Propel Sports showed angry fans rushing onto the pitch right after the final whistle.

They confronted referee Mohammed Tuta and his assistants, Bem Japhet, Shehu Isah, and Alfa Sadiq, forcing the officials to flee.

Security personnel struggled to control the angry crowd and eventually used tear gas to disperse the fans.

Several Shooting Stars players, including Ismail Ayodele and Adams Agba’a, were reportedly attacked during the chaos.

Reacting on his X (formerly Twitter) page on Monday, Shehu Sani described the incident “unacceptable and condemnable.”

He also raised concerns about fan safety at stadiums, saying poor security and crowd control discourage genuine supporters from attending matches.

Sani wrote, “The unruly behaviour of the Kano Pillars fans against the players of the Shooting Stars is unacceptable and condemnable.

“One of the problems I found out when one goes to our stadiums to watch the local league matches is the problem of thugs loitering around. Half of your attention is on the match and half on your safety and that of your vehicle.”

As of the time of reporting, the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) has not released an official statement regarding the attack.
