How Bandits Killed Two People, Injured One During Kwara Church Attack – Police [Video]

Kwara State Police Command has confirmed that two people were killed and another injured after bandits carried out attacks in Eruku, a border community in Ekiti Local Government Area.

One of the targets was a parish of the Christ Apostolic Church, where the attackers opened fire on worshippers.

According to police, one person was shot dead inside the church, while another body was later discovered in the surrounding bush.

In a statement, the command’s spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the incident happened around 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

She explained that the Divisional Police Officer in Eruku and a team of officers rushed to the area after hearing gunshots, working alongside local vigilantes.

Ejire-Adeyemi said the police’s quick response forced the bandits to flee into the forest.

“The Kwara State Police Command confirms an attempted bandit attack in Eruku, which occurred at about 18:00 hours of today, 18th November, 2025.

“The DPO Eruku and his team of police operatives, in collaboration with vigilantes, swiftly responded to the sound of gunshots emanating from the outskirts of the town, prompting the hoodlums to flee into the bush,” the statement read.

The police statement added, “Police confirmed that a male victim, Mr. Aderemi, was fatally shot inside the church, while another, Mr. Tunde Asaba Ajayi, was found dead in the bush.

“A vigilante, Segun Alaja, sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to ECWA Hospital, Eruku, for treatment.

“CP Adekimi Ojo commended the swift response of the police and vigilantes. He also assures the public that security agencies will not relent until these hoodlums are totally decimated.”

Earlier reports said the first attack took place during a special service at the Christ Apostolic Church parish.

Witnesses said that gunmen stormed the building, firing shots that killed three worshippers on the spot before taking the pastor and several congregants into the bush.

The eyewitness said, “The gunmen came into the church while people were gathered. They started shooting and three people died immediately. They later rounded up some worshippers, including the pastor, and marched them into the bush.”

The bandits were also reported to have struck along the Ilorin–Kabba Road shortly after, causing travellers to abandon their vehicles and run into nearby bushes.

A traveller returning from Niger State recounted in a voice note that the attackers opened fire around 6:30 p.m., killing two people instantly.

They came around 6:30pm and started shooting. Two people were killed instantly, and we don’t even know how many were taken; they are still shooting—you can hear it,” he added.

Community leaders say Eruku has endured multiple attacks within the past three weeks.

One resident, Benjamin Ayeoribe, said locals have repeatedly appealed to both state and local authorities for help without seeing any meaningful action.

He urged the federal government to intervene, saying the community is overwhelmed and living in constant fear.

Ayeoribe said, “We have begged the local and state governments for help, but nothing concrete has come. We are living in fear every day…We need federal help. These attacks are becoming too much for us to bear. We are pleading with the President to intervene urgently.”

A video from the incident, which appeared to be captured during a live-streamed service, shows worshippers in the middle of their programme when repeated gunshots echoed from outside. Panic broke out as the congregation scattered.

Moments later, several armed men entered the church and searched the premises. The attack was said to have taken place around 6 p.m., with more than five armed bandits seen storming the building and taking away personal items belonging to worshippers.
