Doris Ogala Demands N1bn From Pastor Chris Okafor Over Unfulfilled Marriage Promise

Nollywood actress Doris Ogala has demanded N1 billion in damages from Pastor Chris Okafor, the founder of Grace Nation Liberation City, over his alleged broken promise to marry her.

The demand came a few days after Pastor Okafor married another woman, despite Ogala’s earlier public claims that he had assured her they would get married.

Doris Ogala had accused the cleric of destroying her life by ending their relationship without informing her.

Through her lawyer, Nzeakor Atulomah of Synergy Law Partners, the actress is seeking aggravated and general damages for emotional, psychological, and reputational harm caused by their relationship and how it played out publicly.

In a letter dated December 16, 2025, and sent to Pastor Okafor’s Ojodu Berger address, her lawyers warned that legal action would follow if he fails to meet the demand within 21 days.

According to the letter, Ogala claimed the pastor made a clear and repeated promise to marry her, which formed the foundation of a relationship that reportedly began in 2017.

Her lawyers said the relationship started when the actress was emotionally vulnerable and seeking pastoral guidance.

They argued that the promise went beyond words, pointing to actions such as introductions to family members and joint appearances at family events.

The letter also claimed that photos, videos, WhatsApp chats, and bank records exist to support her claim and show she had a genuine expectation of marriage.

Ogala further alleged that she acted based on the promise, taking steps her lawyers described as irreversible.

These reportedly included leaving a troubled marriage and abandoning any chance of reconciliation because she believed she was heading into a new marital commitment.

The actress also claimed financial losses, alleging that she transferred N45 million to Pastor Okafor in a single transaction and gave him access to her finances because of the relationship and the promise of marriage.

According to her lawyers, the situation worsened when the pastor publicly announced his engagement to another woman, which they described as a clear rejection of the alleged promise.

They said the public nature of the announcement caused serious emotional and reputational damage to Ogala, given her status as a public figure.

The letter added that Ogala has since faced intense public attention, online harassment, and victim-blaming, which her legal team linked to the fallout from the incident.

They also accused Pastor Okafor of being responsible for the alleged unauthorised release of private photos, an allegation he had not responded to as of the time of filing this report.

While acknowledging that no one can be forced into marriage, Ogala’s lawyers argued that the law allows compensation for breach of promise and related harm.

They are therefore demanding N1 billion in damages for emotional distress, reputational damage, and the public manner in which the alleged promise was broken.

The lawyers warned that failure to comply within 21 days would lead to a lawsuit in court.

The letter partly read: “While marriage cannot be forced between our client and yourself, the law requires suitable redress for such a calculated and publicly executed breach. We hereby demand, therefore, that you pay our client the sum of NGN 1,000,000,000 (one billion naira).

“This amount represents aggravated and general damages for the breach itself, the irreparable harm to her reputation, her psychological and physical health, and the egregious manner in which the breach was executed in public. 

“We require you to ensure that, within twenty-one (21) days of the date of receipt of this letter, this full reparation amount is deposited into our client bank account as follows. United Bank for Africa plc, Account No.: 2088702393, Account Name: Doris Uzumma Umezurike.”

She stated that failure by the pastor to comply with the demand would compel her to seek legal redress in court.

“We trust that you will act to obviate the need for further legal escalation in any event. Please be assured that we will file a claim in the appropriate court if you fail to meet the above demands. Meanwhile, please accept our best professional courtesies, while we look forward to hearing from you.”

Attempts to get a response from Pastor Okafor or his legal representatives were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
