Pregnant Woman Dies In Katsina Hospital After Health Worker Rejected Bank Payment

A pregnant woman, Aisha Najamu, has reportedly died at Turai Umaru Musa Yar’adua Maternity and Children Hospital in Katsina State.

It was gathered that Aisha Najamu died after a health worker refused to accept a bank transfer for oxygen treatment, insisting on cash only.

The incident happened on Monday after Najamu arrived at the hospital in critical condition, urgently needing oxygen.

An eyewitness told Channels Television on Friday that the cashier on duty refused to either process the payment or issue a receipt because the woman did not have cash, citing the hospital’s internal rule against bank transfers.

A man who tried to intervene asked the cashier to accept a transfer so Najamu could receive treatment, but the cashier refused, saying the hospital policy did not allow it.

The eyewitness said he even offered an additional $100 to cover the cost, but the cashier still would not process the payment.

The witness described the scene as “deeply distressing,” saying Najamu cried for help until she passed away around 11:30 p.m.

The hospital management said they had not received a formal public complaint about the case, only reports through the human-rights group IHRAAC.

Cashier Aminu Kofar-Bai expressed condolences and said the hospital would visit the family and investigate any staff found negligent.

Hospital officials defended their payment rules, noting that the Katsina State Government’s TSA guidelines prohibit accepting transfers into personal accounts. They said the hospital lacks POS machines and relies entirely on cash.

The officials also cited a shortage of medical oxygen, which they often have to purchase from Daura LGA.

Head of Pharmacy Usman Salisu Wada admitted that oxygen supplies are limited and said the staff member might have strictly followed policy out of concern about accusations of misconduct.

He added that sometimes patients who receive emergency assistance later fail to pay their bills.
