President Bola Tinubu is seeking to make ‘exceptional provision’ for VIPs ‘exposed’ by police withdrawal.

Tinubu To Make 'Exceptional Provision' For VIPs 'Exposed' By Police Withdrawal

Tinubu asked Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the minister of interior, to work with the inspector-general of police and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to provide security for VIPs who may have been left unprotected.

On November 23, Tinubu instructed that police officers assigned to VIPs be withdrawn immediately.

The decision followed a security briefing with the IGP, service chiefs and the head of the DSS.

According to the presidency, the goal is to deploy more officers to communities that are short-staffed and struggling with insecurity.

Speaking before the federal executive council meeting on Wednesday, Tinubu told members of his cabinet that anyone facing security concerns because of their duties should reach out to the IGP for approval and assistance.

Tinubu then directed the interior minister to coordinate with the police and the NSCDC so civil defence officers can take over the roles previously handled by withdrawn police escorts, ensuring affected VIPs are not left without protection.

He added that the NSA and DSS should review the current security structure and supply any additional information needed.

“If you have any problem of security because of the nature of assignment, please contact the IGP and get my clearance,” Tinubu said.

The minister for interior should liaise IGP and civil defence structure to replace those police officers, who are on special security duties. So that you don’t leave people exposed.

“NSA and DSS to provide further information and form themselves the committee and review the structure.

“It should be effected. We face challenges of Kidnapping and terrorism, we need all the forces that we can utilise.

“I know some of our people are exposed and I understand that we have to make exceptional provision for them and civil defence are equally armed and I want to know that from NSA to arm our forest guards too, take it very seriously.”
