Nigeria Thrown Into Darkness As National Grid Collapses For First Time In 2026

Nigeria was plunged into a nationwide blackout on Friday after the national power grid collapsed for the first time this year.

Figures from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) show that electricity generation dropped to zero megawatts following the grid failure.

The data also revealed that by 1 pm on Friday, no power was supplied to any of the country’s 11 electricity distribution companies.

DisCos affected by the outage include Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja, and Yola, all of which recorded zero power allocation.

The latest grid collapse comes after several similar incidents recorded in 2025, with the most recent failure happening on December 29.

Despite repeated promises and ongoing efforts to improve and expand Nigeria’s power infrastructure, the country continues to experience frequent grid breakdowns.

KanyiDaily recalls that several parts of Nigeria experienced power outages after the national electricity grid collapsed on December 29, 2025.
