The Rivers State House of Assembly has warned of alleged secret moves by unidentified individuals to interfere with the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the deputy governor, Ngozi Odu.

Rivers Assembly Alleges Plots To Undermine Impeachment Process Against Fubara

KanyiDaily recalls that the impeachment process began last Thursday, when the Rivers State House of Assembly accused Governor Fubara and his deputy of gross misconduct.

In a statement dated January 11, 2026, the Assembly said it had received reliable information that some people were approaching Rivers State High Courts outside the Port Harcourt Judicial Division to obtain ex parte orders aimed at stopping the legislature from carrying out its constitutional duties.

The statement, signed by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Enemi George, described such actions as unlawful and a direct attempt to undermine the Nigerian Constitution.

The Assembly cited Sections 272 (3) and 188(10) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which restrict courts from intervening in matters relating to the tenure of elected officials and clearly prohibit judicial involvement in impeachment proceedings.

“These persons are also fully aware of judicial pronouncements on this matter, especially recently at the court of appeal on a matter involving similar ex parte order by a Rivers state high court contrary to section 272(3) of the constitution. A word is enough for the wise.

“Therefore, with the leave of the speaker of the Rivers state house of assembly, I call on those concerned to exercise restraint and refrain from acts inimical to the Constitution and the rule of law,” the statement further read.

The Assembly also referred to recent Court of Appeal rulings that overturned similar ex parte orders previously granted by a Rivers State High Court, noting that the legal position on the matter is already well established.

According to the statement, those involved in the impeachment process have been properly served with notices detailing allegations of gross misconduct and are expected to respond through the appropriate channels instead of engaging in what the Assembly described as backdoor tactics to derail the process.

With the approval of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, the House urged all parties to act with restraint and respect the rule of law.

It stressed that the Assembly remains committed to constitutional order and democratic principles and will not be deterred by attempts to intimidate or discredit its members.

The statement was signed by Hon. Dr Enemi Alabo George, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints.

KanyiDaily recalls that Rivers Governor, Siminalayi Fubara recently appealed to residents to remain calm as the State House of Assembly moves forward with impeachment proceedings against him.
