A video of the moment was shared via X on Saturday by Lere Olayinka, a media aide to the FCT minister.
The video showed women spraying their wrappers on the ground for Wike’s vehicle to pass through as it entered the venue.
In many parts of the country, the act of laying wrappers is seen as a traditional sign of honour and loyalty.
Sharing the video, Olayinka wrote, “Port Harcourt City Local Government is today. This is how the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, was received a few minutes ago.”
The event came at a time of rising political tension in Rivers State, as supporters of Wike and those of Governor Siminalayi Fubara continue to face off in an ongoing political rivalry.
KanyiDaily recalls that Rivers House of Assembly began impeachment proceedings against Fubara on Thursday, accusing the governor of gross misconduct.
