The healer, known only as Mr. Sinayogo, was arrested after Mali was eliminated from the AFCON tournament.
Mali’s national team lost 1-0 to Senegal in the quarter-finals last Friday.
It was gathered that Sinayogo received over 22 million CFA francs in donations, according to an associate.
After Mali’s loss, a crowd of angry people gathered at his home before police intervened and took him into custody.
Sinayogo was arrested on Saturday in the capital, Bamako, and is being held at the cybercrime division.
Officials said the traditional healer is suspected of “fraud,” and that “charlatanism is punishable by law in Mali.”
They noted that arresting him during the tournament would have been difficult because of the ongoing AFCON.
Sinayogo, who was previously a political activist, “suddenly declared himself a marabout and made a fortune,” according to a social media creator familiar with him.
KanyiDaily had also reported how the EFCC handed over properties and cash recovered from a fake spiritualist, Fatai Alli, to his victim, Daniel Attiogbe, in Ibadan.
