Trump made the remarks on Wednesday while addressing European leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
According to him, America played the decisive role in winning the war.
“Without us right now, you would all be speaking German and a little Japanese,” he said.
Before making the comment, Trump revisited his long-standing interest in Greenland.
He recalled that Denmark was quickly overrun by Germany during World War II and was unable to protect either itself or Greenland at the time.
“Denmark fell to Germany after just six hours of fighting, and was totally unable to defend either itself or Greenland. So the United States was then compelled, and we did it,” he said.
Trump expressed frustration at the US’ decision at the time to allow Denmark to retain Greenland as a territory.
“After the war, we gave Greenland back to Denmark. How stupid were we to do that? But we did it. But we gave it back, but how ungrateful are they now?” the US president said.
“So now our country and the world face much greater risks than it did ever before, because of missiles, because of nuclear weapons of warfare that I can’t even talk about.”
Trump said he was “seeking immediate negotiations to once again discuss the acquisition of Greenland by the United States” but ruled out options of using force.
In the same speech, he referenced recent US actions in Venezuela, claiming American forces captured President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
Trump praised the operation and suggested other countries should cooperate with the United States in a similar way.
KanyiDaily had reported how the US had deployed force earlier this month in Venezuela and captured President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
