The United States government has suspended funding for HIV treatment programs in Nigeria and other developing countries following an order by President Donald Trump.

This decision stems from an executive order on foreign aid that Trump signed on his first day in office, directing all agencies involved in managing foreign assistance programs to pause the release of funds.
As a result, the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a key U.S. program supporting HIV treatment in Africa and other regions, has halted its operations for at least 90 days.
PEPFAR, with an annual budget of $6.5 billion, provides treatment to over 20.6 million people and has been instrumental in saving an estimated 26 million lives since its launch.
According to reports, unless an exemption is granted soon, PEPFAR may face extended suspension or even potential termination under the Trump administration’s policy, which emphasizes reducing foreign aid without clear benefits to Americans.
A State Department official explained, “The United States is no longer going to blindly dole out money with no return for the American people.”
Public health experts have expressed concern that the program could be permanently shut down, potentially disrupting vital HIV services.
However, some remain optimistic that Marco Rubio, who has supported PEPFAR in the past and is set to become Secretary of State, might push for the program’s continuation.
Nigeria, one of the countries hardest hit by HIV, heavily relies on PEPFAR for life-saving treatments and healthcare support.
Approximately two million Nigerians living with HIV benefit from the program, which has contributed over $6 billion to the country’s fight against the epidemic.
The suspension or potential end of PEPFAR funding could severely affect Nigeria’s efforts to combat HIV, putting millions of lives at risk and hindering progress made in controlling the virus.
KanyiDaily recalls that President Donald Trump also announced on Monday that he had signed four executive orders aimed at reshaping the United States military’s policies and operations.
