In a video posted on Saturday, Papaya showed a bruise on her face, alleging that she and her driver were assaulted by officers at a checkpoint.
The media personality, who appeared upset in the video, claimed that one of the officers hit her on the face, stomach and chest with a gun, and also took her phone.
She said she did not understand why they were treated that way, adding that they had already handed over the necessary vehicle papers and her driver’s licence.
“The policeman snatched my phone. He slapped me and then hit my stomach, my face and my breast with a gun.
“They had already collected all the necessary documents and the driver’s licence,” she said.
Reacting to the allegation on X, Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), gave a different account of what happened.
Hundeyin said the incident occurred after Papaya allegedly refused to allow officers on night patrol to carry out a routine search of her car around 2 a.m.
He claimed the vehicle, which had three men and two women inside, was stopped for a check but she declined, insisting the police could not search her car.
“The part before she went live. Just before 2am, police on night patrol stopped a car conveying three men and two women and asked to check the car. She bluntly refused saying, ‘You cannot search my car. Don’t you know Papaya? Even your bosses know me,” Hundeyin claims.
“She chose to rather go to the station after which an officer sat in her vehicle, not before an initial refusal. Her vehicle was in front while the patrol vehicle was following behind.
“She instructed her driver to speed off, leaving the patrol vehicle far behind. At that rate, the patrol van was going to lose them. The police had to radio the patrol team far ahead to intercept them. Then the live began.”
Hundeyin added that the matter will be investigated further by the Lagos State Police Command.
