Tinubu Approves Appointment Of Tunji Disu As Acting Inspector-General Of Police

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Tunji Disu as the acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.

A statement on Tuesday by Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s special adviser on information and strategy, said Egbetokun stepped down from his role due to “pressing family considerations.”

The president plans to call a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally approve Disu’s appointment.

Once the council completes this step, the new IGP’s name will be sent to the Senate for confirmation.

In view of the current security challenges confronting the nation, and acting in accordance with extant laws and legal guidance, President Tinubu has approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu to serve as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect,” Onanuga said.

“The President is confident that AIG Disu’s experience, operational depth, and demonstrated leadership capacity will provide steady and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force during this critical period.

“In compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council shortly to formally consider the appointment of AIG Disu as substantive Inspector-General of Police, after which his name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation.

“The President reiterates his administration’s unwavering commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional responsibilities.”

Egbetokun was appointed IGP by Tinubu on June 19, 2023, succeeding Usman Baba, and was confirmed by the police council in October 2023.

Under the amended Police Act, he would have served a four-year term ending in June 2027.

Earlier this month, Disu began his role as assistant inspector-general of police at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) annex in Alagbon, Lagos.

Tinubu Disu holds a bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University and master’s degrees in public administration, criminology, and security and legal psychology.

He joined the police in 1992 and has held major leadership positions, including commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos, head of the intelligence response team, commissioner of police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory, and AIG overseeing the special protection unit.

KanyiDaily had reported that Kayode Egbetokun resigned as Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police (IGP).
