Alex Otti Launches Abia Connect Card For Cashless Green Shuttle Payment

The Abia State Government has launched the Abia Connect Card, a cashless payment system for the Green Shuttle Bus Service, as part of its push to modernize public transportation in the state.

The project, led by the Ministry of Transportation under Governor Alex Otti, is designed to make commuting smoother and more convenient for residents.

In a statement released on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, the government described the rollout as a key step toward creating a digital, transparent, and efficient transport system.

The Abia Connect Card, also called the “Abia State Card,” removed the challenges of paying with cash, such as delays, disputes over change, and revenue losses.

“We are intentionally moving away from the hassles of cash transactions. With the Abia Connect Card, commuting becomes as simple as a single tap. It is efficient, reliable, and designed to ensure that our public transport system works effectively for everyone,” the statement read.

The government said residents can get their first card for free at designated Green Shuttle terminals and approved agent locations in Aba and Umuahia.

The statement noted that to receive a card, commuters need to provide their ABSSIN, while those without one can register through the Abia Pay portal.

It stated that once the card is loaded with funds, subject to a ₦50 top-up fee, commuters should simply tap it on the payment device when boarding.

A confirmation sound indicates that the payment was successful. The card has no expiration date, and any funds added remain valid indefinitely.

Kanu said the inter-city fares include Aba–Umuahia at ₦800 and Umuahia–Ohafia at ₦1,000. City services within Aba and Umuahia operate at a flat rate of ₦150 across designated routes.

The government encouraged residents to take advantage of the free card distribution, saying the initiative will improve accountability and transparency in the state’s transport sector.

“Our objective remains clear: to make Abia State’s transport system a model of innovation, efficiency and transparency in Nigeria.

“I encourage all residents to obtain their cards and be part of this transformative journey toward a smarter Abia,” the statement added.
