The news of his death was announced on Saturday morning by his former teammate, Segun Odegbami, who also played in Nigeria’s winning team at the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Odegbami announced on his Facebook page that Nwosu died around 4:00 a.m. at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment in the intensive care unit since Wednesday.
According to him, Nwosu had spent five days in the hospital fighting for his life before he passed away.
“After five days in hospital battling for his life, the one I call ‘Youngest Millionaire’ passed on at 4:00 am this morning at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, where he had been in intensive care since Wednesday.
“It is with deep pain in my heart that I have to be the conveyor of the news of the death of Henry Nwosu MON. May he rest peacefully with our Creator in Heaven,” Odegbami wrote.
Henry Nwosu, who was from Imo State, was the youngest player in Nigeria’s squad that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations.
That victory marked the country’s first continental title, achieved on home soil by the Green Eagles.
During his playing career, Nwosu was admired for his creativity, vision and strong technical skills in midfield.
He later became an important figure in Nigeria’s domestic football scene.
After retiring from professional football, he stayed involved in the sport by working as a coach and mentor, helping to guide and develop younger players.
