The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed that four people suspected to be bandits were arrested on Sunday near the Akure Airport at Eleyewo in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The arrest followed a joint security operation carried out by aviation security officers and other local security agencies.
The development comes as residents continue to express concern over frequent kidnappings and violent incidents around Ilu-Abo community, which is close to the airport.
Over the past two months, at least ten kidnapping cases have reportedly occurred in the area, prompting protests by residents who are calling on the government and security agencies to take urgent action.
FAAN explained that the suspects were arrested after security officials received an emergency alert about some suspicious people seen behind the airport fence towards the Eleyewo community.
A statement released by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, said security personnel quickly began a joint search operation after receiving the report.
According to him, the operation involved FAAN’s Aviation Security (AVSEC), the Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Police Force, along with other local security groups.
“During the operation, some individuals reportedly attempted to flee the area, but four suspects were eventually apprehended by the joint security team.
“The suspects have been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force Area Command for further interrogation,” the statement said.
FAAN praised the quick cooperation between aviation security officers, the military, the police and other local groups such as the Amotekun Corps and community vigilantes, noting that their joint effort made the arrests possible.
The authority also said the incident highlights the need for stronger protection around airport boundaries across the country.
It added that the federal government, through the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, with support from the administration of President Bola Tinubu, has sped up efforts to install modern perimeter fencing and improve security infrastructure at airports nationwide.
FAAN further stated that work has already begun in phases to strengthen security at airports under its management to prevent illegal entry and other threats.
The agency assured travellers and communities around airports that it remains committed to maintaining safety and security at all airport facilities across Nigeria.
