State-run Iran TV said Mousavi was killed along with Defence Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh, Revolutionary Guards commander Mohammad Pakpour, and Ali Shamkhani, head of Iran’s defence council.
The officials were reportedly meeting at the defence council when the attack occurred.
Mousavi was among around 30 top Iranian leaders and military officials targeted in the joint US-Israel operation.
Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, was also killed, along with his daughter, grandchild, daughter-in-law, and son-in-law.
State broadcaster IRIB confirmed Khamenei’s death on Sunday, calling him a martyr.
Mehr, a state-linked news agency, described him as a scholar and fighter who sacrificed his life for Iran and has joined the ranks of martyrs.
Following the announcement, Iran declared 40 days of mourning.
Iran had launched drone attacks targeting US civilian and military sites across the Gulf, including strikes affecting airports and shopping areas in Dubai. This prompted the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, and Kuwait to close their airspace on Saturday.
KanyiDaily recalls that the United States and Israel carried out a series of strikes on Iranian cities on Saturday, causing explosions and large columns of smoke in the capital, Tehran.
