Several Passengers Injured In Abuja-Kaduna Train Accident

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has confirmed that a number of passengers were injured after a train incident occurred on the Abuja–Kaduna railway line on Monday morning.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the corporation, Kayode Opeifa, explained in a statement that the incident happened around 10:30 a.m. close to Asham Train Station.

According to him, the situation occurred when a locomotive at the rear of the train came into contact with the passenger coach behind it because of a problem with the coupling mechanism.

Opeifa said passengers who sustained injuries were quickly given first aid and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, adding that no deaths were reported from the incident.

Following the development, the railway corporation activated its emergency response procedures and sent technical teams to the location to assess the situation.

He further revealed that officials from the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau were also at the scene to carry out a detailed investigation into what caused the incident, in line with safety regulations.

After the affected locomotive and coach were removed, the train was able to continue its journey and arrived at Idu Train Station at about 10:39 a.m., which was roughly 38 minutes later than the scheduled arrival time.

The NRC reassured passengers and the public that ensuring safety remains its main priority, stressing that steps are being taken to address the issue and maintain safe train operations.

It also noted that more information will be released as investigations continue.

KanyiDaily also reported how a passenger train heading from Abuja to Kaduna derailed on Tuesday morning, sparking fear among travelers and their families.
