Students Escape Death As Four-Storey School Building Collapses In Lagos

Students and staff at a school in Ogba, Lagos, narrowly escaped a tragedy on Monday after the four-storey building that housed the institution collapsed shortly after they were evacuated.

The building, which contained Yemco Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College, fell around midday at 11 Adudatu Street, behind County Hospital in the Aguda area of Ogba.

Residents said the collapse occurred just minutes after students and teachers were hurried out, preventing what could have been a major disaster.

A local resident told TheCable that warning signs had appeared earlier when wooden planks reportedly fell from the roof, causing concern in the neighbourhood.

The students narrowly escaped the incident. It was just about three minutes after they were evacuated from the building that the structure collapsed,” the resident said, noting that there were no clear indications that the structure was about to fail.

According to witnesses, an elderly man had alerted school authorities about possible safety issues, leading to the rapid evacuation of everyone inside.

Another resident, Taiwo Ridwan, narrated how the building showed distress before it fell.

At first, the house started cracking little by little. The window frames had already fallen apart. After some minutes, the cement body of the house began peeling off. Not long after that, the building just sank,” he said.

Officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service later secured the area and restricted access.

Part of the property that was used for residential purposes remained standing beside the collapsed building.

No injuries were reported at the time of filing this report, and the Fire and Rescue Service had not yet issued a statement.

Efforts to reach Margaret Adeseye, the service’s Director of Public Affairs, for comment were unsuccessful.
