He referenced findings from research published in the journal Socius, noting that “the group that stands out the most is second-generation Nigerian Americans.”
According to the study, “their educational attainment exceeds all other racial/ethnic groups, including Asian Americans.”
The research paper, titled The Socioeconomic Attainments of Second-Generation Nigerian and Other Black Americans: Evidence from the Current Population Survey, 2009 to 2019, examined education levels and income patterns among second-generation Black Americans, with a special focus on those of Nigerian descent.
The study was carried out by Arthur Sakamoto, Ernesto F. L. Amaral, Sharron Xuanren Wang, and Courtney Nelson.
It showed that second-generation Nigerian Americans consistently recorded stronger educational outcomes compared to other groups, including second-generation Asian Americans, other Black immigrant groups, and third-generation African Americans.
It also found that when factors like age, education level, and disability were taken into account, the earnings of second-generation Nigerian Americans were similar to those of third-generation white Americans.
The researchers explained that these results highlight differences within Black American populations, shaped by background, gender, and immigrant generation.
They also suggested that more research is needed to better understand these patterns.
Since being shared online, the findings have sparked wide conversations about education, immigration, and social mobility in the United States.
