Terrorists Kill Colonel, Six Soldiers During Attack On Military Base In Borno

A colonel and six Nigerian Army soldiers have been killed during a terrorist attack in Borno State.

It was gathered that the troops were deployed to respond to an overnight assault on a military base in Monguno.

A statement on Monday by Sani Uba, media information officer of the North-East Joint Task Force, said the insurgents attacked troops at the Charlie 13 location on Sunday night.

He said the soldiers were able to push back the terrorists after a heavy exchange of gunfire, forcing them to retreat.

However, the situation turned deadly when the commanding officer moved closer to the scene to assess what had happened.

While heading there, his vehicle hit an improvised explosive device (IED), which caused a severe blast that killed him and six soldiers.

His actions, even after the immediate threat had been neutralised, reflected the highest traditions of military leadership; courage, selfless service, and leading from the front,” the statement reads.

“His willingness to move towards the troops in the heat of the battle, despite the prevailing danger, stands as a profound testament to his valour, sense of duty, and unwavering commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of his men.

“Operation HADIN KAI deeply mourns the loss of this exceptional officer and the other brave personnel who paid the supreme price in service to the nation.

“Their sacrifice will forever remain etched in the memory of the Armed Forces and the grateful nation they served.”

The attack happened just days after another raid on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State, where two soldiers and two officers were killed, including Brigadier-General Oseni Braimah of the 29 Brigade.
