He officially assumed duty on Thursday after presenting his letter of credence to the US government and President Donald Trump at the White House.

Kayode Are’s appointment followed nominations sent to the Senate by President Bola Tinubu in November 2025.

The president initially submitted a list of 32 candidates and later added three more names for non-career ambassadorial positions.

Are, who is from Ogun State, was listed among the non-career nominees, alongside Aminu Dalhatu from Jigawa State and Ayodele Oke from Oyo State.

In December 2025, the Senate approved 64 nominees in total, including 34 career diplomats and 30 non-career appointees.

Kayode Are was later assigned to Washington in January, where he now serves as Nigeria’s official representative to the United States.
