The attack happened on Thursday at about 5pm along the Itobe-Ochadamu Expressway, near Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area.
Confirming the incident on Friday, the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Saliu, said the attackers came out of a nearby bush and opened fire on vehicles using the road.
According to the police, a blue Toyota Corolla with registration number GWA 636 CH was later found abandoned on the highway.
Yunusa, who was driving the vehicle, was found dead inside the car, while the other occupant was reportedly forced into the bush by the gunmen.
Saliu said police officers and other security agencies had launched a search operation in the surrounding forests to rescue the abducted victim and track down those responsible for the attack.
The body of the APC chairman was taken to Grimard Hospital in Anyigba for an autopsy, while investigators continued to work on leads that could help identify the attackers.
The Kogi State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, ordered security personnel to maintain a strong presence along the affected route and ensure that the suspects are brought to justice.
The police also advised residents and motorists using the road to stay alert and report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
The command said it would release more information as the investigation progresses.
