The 18-year-old, who recently joined Katsina United from Kano Pillars, reportedly fell unconscious during the Gusau/Ahlan Pre-season Cup match.
He was immediately taken to K-Dara Specialist Hospital, where a doctor reportedly declared him dead.
Following the report of his death, Katsina United released a condolence message.
His former clubs, including Kano Pillars and Heartland, also shared messages mourning the young defender.
However, a new development has emerged, with reports stating that Chinedu Ozor is now receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of Katsina General Hospital.
Katsina United media officer Nasir Gide confirmed the development, explaining that the player’s body was initially taken to the morgue after he was declared dead.
“When we rushed him to a nearby hospital, he was confirmed dead by a doctor. We collected police report and took him back to Katsina General Hospital where he was also said to be dead. They took his body to the morgue there,” Gide told PUNCH.
“Later, the medical personnel informed us that he has been taken back to the ICU from the morgue when they noticed movement in his body.”
Heartland had also reported the unexpected development on X, stating that Chinedu had been moved from the mortuary back to the hospital after reportedly showing signs of life.
The club said he was receiving oxygen while medical workers tried to stabilise him.
“Reliable sources say Chinedu Ozor has been moved from the mortuary to the hospital after reportedly showing signs of movement. He is currently on oxygen as medics work to revive him.
“Ozor, we believe in the God of a second chance. May God restore,” Heartland posted.
A Niger Tornadoes player who took part in the match expressed hope that the young defender would recover, describing the incident as heartbreaking.
Meanwhile, Barau FC, one of the teams taking part in the tournament, has pulled out of the competition.
The club criticised the organisers for continuing the tournament after the medical emergency.
The incident has sparked fresh concerns about the level of medical facilities and emergency response available at football grounds in Nigeria.
