Lagos Deputy Governor Vows To Remove Car Spotters From Streets, Calls Practice ‘Criminal’

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to step up its crackdown on people who stop and harass motorists, especially drivers of expensive cars, along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat described the activity as criminal, saying the government would not allow anyone to harass or extort motorists on the state’s roads.

Speaking on Nigeria Info FM, Hamzat said security agencies had already started removing people involved in the activity from the area.

He said several suspects had been arrested, while some had already been taken before a Magistrate Court.

The deputy governor also explained that security agencies are using surveillance cameras installed along the Lekki-Epe corridor to identify and track people involved in the alleged harassment.

According to him, more arrests were made over the weekend, with some of those arrested now facing legal proceedings.

‘That is criminal, and therefore, we will not allow it. So, we will take a lot of them off the street,” Hamzat stated.

“A lot of people have been arrested, really. A lot of cameras are also on that road and people have been seen… some people are in the Magistrate Court today.”

Hamzat said the state government would continue the enforcement until the roads are free from unauthorised individuals who target motorists and disrupt traffic and public safety.
