Former Super Eagles skipper William Troost-Ekong has reportedly taken a major personal step in Qatar after reciting the Shahadah, the declaration of faith in Islam.
The Nigerian defender, who now represents Qatar Stars League outfit Al-Ahli, was reportedly said to have embraced the religion on Wednesday, September 23, with Qatari publication Al-Arab among the outlets reporting the development.
Footage shared online appears to capture Troost-Ekong making the declaration of faith in Doha. Islamic cleric Dr Muhammad Salah also posted a video of the footballer performing the same act on his verified Facebook page.
Reports indicate that the footballer has shown interest in understanding Islam more deeply and learning about its teachings.
Troost-Ekong’s move to the Middle East began in 2024 when he joined a Saudi Arabian club. He subsequently relocated to Qatar in January 2026 after agreeing an 18-month contract with Al-Ahli.
The 33-year-old has been an important figure in Nigerian football, having worn the Super Eagles captain’s armband and featured for the country at major international competitions throughout his career.
