Kano Senator Kawu Sumaila Dumps NNPP For APC

Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the announcement during Tuesday’s plenary session after reading a letter from Sumaila.

In the letter, the senator cited serious internal issues within the NNPP, describing the party as deeply divided and no longer functional.

Sumaila said his decision to switch parties was based on recent events in the NNPP and his desire to better serve his constituents, who he considers his main priority.

His defection boosts the APC’s numbers in the Senate to 65 members, further strengthening its majority.

As he made his way to the APC side of the chamber, several senators cheered loudly to welcome him.

With the latest update, the Senate now consists of 65 APC lawmakers, 33 from the PDP, five from the Labour Party, two each from the NNPP and SDP, and one from APGA.

Sumaila had previously left the APC for the NNPP in May 2022, but on April 23, he confirmed his return to the APC in a Facebook post.

Yes, it is true — the rumours regarding my defection are accurate. All politics is local, and my primary concern has always been, and remains, the welfare of my immediate constituency,” he wrote.

KanyiDaily recalls that Abia State Governor, Alex Otti recently dismissed rumors suggesting he plans to dump the Labour Party (LP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
