The ex-governor was temporary freed so he could attend and perform the burial rites of his late mother, who died in Cairo, Egypt, after a period of illness.

His son, Bashir El-Rufai, shared the update on his X page on Friday, expressing gratitude over his father’s release.

He wrote, “My beloved great legend of a father (@elrufai) is being released from his unlawful and illegal detention at the hands of one of the most corrupt agencies in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, that is a lame excuse of a pathetic institution.

“Thank you all for all the support. Our family shall never forget these times. We have overcome, as the El-Rufais.”

Nasir El-Rufai has been in custody since February 18 over allegations linked to financial misconduct.

He spent more than a month with the commission before being brought before the Kaduna division of the Federal High Court earlier this week.

The former governor was arraigned alongside Joel Adoga on charges bordering on alleged conversion and possession of public property, as well as money laundering.

The former governor denied the charge, which relates to funds paid into foreign currency accounts and how the money was handled.

KanyiDaily recalls that the court had fixed March 31, 2026, to rule on his bail request, while proceedings continue.
