Former presidential candidate Dele Momodu said he would support President Bola Tinubu if his administration remains committed to the democratic values they fought for during Nigeria’s military rule.

Momodu made the statement during an interview on Arise TV on Thursday, explaining that his main concern was the possibility of Nigeria moving from military dictatorship to what he described as civilian dictatorship.

He said he would go as far as “swim to the depth of the Atlantic Ocean” for Tinubu if the President governed according to the democratic principles they defended during the struggle against military rule.

Momodu said, “I will ordinarily swim to the depth of the Atlantic Ocean for Tinubu if he was practising what we fought against when we were fighting the military.

“There is no earthly reason why I would not, but I would be a bloody hypocrite if after we claimed to have changed the way of military dictatorship, we now replace it with civilian dictatorship. That’s my only problem with him.”

The publisher also clarified that his criticism of Tinubu was focused on political issues and was not intended as a personal attack.

He said he still has great respect for the President and credited Tinubu as one of the people who helped shape his thinking and encouraged him to challenge those in power.

Everything else, you see, when they are abusing him, you won’t see me abusing him. I have tremendous regards for him, and he was one of those who trained me and instilled this kind of discipline that, look, you can take on the establishment and win. And he did win,” Momodu said.

Momodu also praised Tinubu’s political career, saying the President’s success in Lagos helped establish his reputation before he moved onto the national political stage.

And that is why that was the record he carried from Lagos as a local champion to a national champion,” he said.

The relationship between Momodu and Tinubu dates back more than 30 years to their involvement in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement during the 1990s.
