Miss South Africa Zozibini Tunzi has been crowned ‘Miss Universe 2019’ at the Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
The 68th annual Miss Universe competition was hosted by comedy icon/ TV host, Steve Harvey, and Olivia Culpo (Miss Universe 2012).
About 90 women from across the far corners of the known universe assembled on Sunday to compete for a new crown.
They were narrowed down to 20 semifinalists, which included Nigeria’s Olutosin Araromi, during a closed-door competition prior to Sunday’s three-hour live TV event.
South Africa’s Zozibini Tunzi was crowned Miss Universe after excelling through rounds of traditional pageant-style events including the swimsuit and evening gown rounds.
The 26-year-old contestant finished first ahead of the Puerto Rican and Mexican finalists who were the first and second runner-up respectively.
Zozibini Tunzi is the first black woman from her country to wear the Miss Universe crown.
On accepting the crown, she gave a speech that got everyone drowned in their emotions.
“I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me, with my kind of skin and my kind of hair — was never considered to be beautiful. “I think it is time that that stops today. I want children to look at me and see my face and I want them to see their faces reflected in mine,” she said.
Olutosin Araromi, who represented Nigeria at the Miss Universe 2019 finished her race for the crown at the top 20.
However, Araromi is one person who caught the eye of many as her reaction to Zozi’s crowning is probably one of the sweetest moments at the event.
Olutosin made sure to move everyone who was in her way on stage to get to her bestie and roommate, Zozi. When she finally got next to her, Zozi turned to her and the two beauty queens exchanged words of affirmation. At some point, Olutosin was giving the beautiful Zozi a big thumbs and huge smiles.
