Rivers State Police Command has arrested members of a kidnap gang who abducted, killed and buried three students of University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) in a shallow grave at Etoo, Eleme Local Government Area of the state.
The victims identified as Joy Adoki, Nelson Nwafor and Fortune Obemba were declared missing on April 7 after Adoki’s brother, Umor, filed a compliant at Eleme Police Division.
The Nation gathered that days after they disappeared, their kidnappers contacted their families and demanded ransom.
Despite payment of ransom, it was gathered that the kidnappers failed to release the students as promised, leaving their families confused.
Following the complaint by Adoki’s brother, police arrested one Bright alias Nelly, who led investigators to two principal suspects in the kidnap identified as Friday Akpan and Emmanuel both resident in Eteo, Eleme.
It was learnt that Akpan confessed to the police that the three suspects were killed and buried in shallow graves at Eleme, after raping Joy Adoki, the female among them.
Nnamdi Omoni, Police Public Relations Officer, Rivers Command, said that the suspects led investigators to the scene of the murder around 6am on Friday where the three decomposing bodies of the victims were recovered.
Remains of the deceased students have been deposited in the mortuary. Exhibits recovered from them include one AK47 Rifle, three magazines and 72 rounds of ammunition.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Joseph G Mukan, has assured families of the deceased students that justice will be brought to bear in the circumstance.
