Nigerian Immigration Reveals Why It Seized Passport Of #EndSARS Protester, Modupe Odele

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has revealed why it seized the passport of a member of the Feminist Coalition, Modupe Odele, who was involved in the #EndSARS protest against police brutality.

KanyiDaily recalls that Odele, a legal practitioner, had narrated how NIS officials stopped her from travelling out of the country for her birthday celebration in Maldives on Sunday, November 1, 2020.

The lawyer disclosed that she was detained for hours and prevented from travelling out of Nigeria possibly because of her alleged role in the #EndSARS protests.

However, while reacting to the development on Thursday, Sunday James, NIS spokesman, said the travel restriction is not in any way connected to EndSARS.

According to him, Odele’s passport was seized as part of a routine border assignment, not as a result of her campaign against police brutality.

James futher explained that whenever a restriction is placed on any individual, the immigration service is responsible for its enforcement.

“As an enforcement agency in charge of border management, if there is an order restricting anybody from entry into the country, we enforce it without any prejudice.

“This doesn’t have anything to do with EndSARS protest or an individual, it is a routine assignment,” NAN quoted him to have said.

KanyiDaily had also reported how a 20-year-old journalist, Onifade Pelumi, was killed after he was arrested by the police for filming a video showing a popular Lagos-based politician, Abiodun Bolarinwa, shooting #EndSARS protesters at Abule Egba.
