Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has deleted a post he made on his social media pages condemning the killing of Deborah Samuel, a Christian female student at Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto State.
KanyiDaily had reported how Deborah was beaten and burnt to death by her Muslim colleagues over alleged blasphemous remarks considered to be an insult to Prophet Mohammed.
A source said trouble started on Thursday morning when the late Christian student was asked by her colleagues how she managed to pass her exams.
Deborah was said to have attributed her academic excellence to Jesus and this angered her colleagues who asked her to withdraw her statement — to which she refused.
The source said the mob attacked her and then set her body ablaze after overpowering the school security personnel who tried to intervene in the matter.
A gory image and video clip of the incident sparked outrage on social media with many Nigerians calling on authorities to immediately bring the killers to book.
The vice former president, who is seeking the 2023 presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had also taken to his Twitter and Facebook to condemn the barbaric act.
He wrote, “There can not be a justification for such gruesome murder. Deborah Yakubu was murdered, and all those behind her death must be brought to justice. My condolences to her family and friends.”
Less than an hour later, Atiku deleted both posts after northern Islamic fanatics warned him to stay away from condemning Deborah’s murder, threatening to vote against him at the presidential polls.
Checks on Atiku’s social media handles on Thursday night revealed that the posts which garnered thousands of reactions within minutes were no longer there.
KanyiDaily had also reported how a middle-aged man was tortured and burnt to death by angry youths for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammad in Bauchi State.
