UK Govt Speaks On Postponement Of EPL Matches To Mourn Queen Elizabeth

UK government have left the decision to postpone sporting fixtures this weekend up to individual organisations.

The British Government said there is “no obligation to cancel or postpone events and sporting fixtures, or close entertainment venues” due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

UK Announces Stance On Queen Elizabeth’s Mourning

KanyiDaily had earlier reported that Queen Elizabeth, who was the longest-serving British monarch, died at the age of 96 on Thursday, September 9, 2021.

The United Kingdon is now set to enter a period of national mourning and there were speculations that the world of sports including the Premier League would postpone its matches scheduled for this weekend.

But in a statement on Friday, the UK government said there is no obligation for sporting bodies to cancel fixtures during the National Mourning period.

The statement reads, “There is no obligation to cancel or postpone events and sporting fixtures, or close entertainment venues during the National Mourning period.

“This is at the discretion of individual organisations. As a mark of respect, organisations might wish to consider cancelling or postponing events or closing venues on the day of the State Funeral.

“They are under no obligation to do and this is entirely at the discretion of the individual organisations.

“If sporting fixtures or events are planned for the day of the State Funeral, organisations may want to adjust the event timings so they do not clash with the timings of the funeral services and associated processions.

“As a mark of respect, and in keeping with the tone of National Mourning, organisers may wish to hold a period of silence and/or play the National Anthem at the start of events or sporting fixtures, and players may wish to wear black armbands.”

Meanwhile, Nollywood actress, Caroline Danjuma has mourned the death of Queen Elizabeth II of England, who she named after her daughter.
