Afrobeats artist, Naira Marley has urged Nigerian youths to steer clear of drugs and substance abuse due to its detrimental effects on their overall well-being.

KanyiDaily recalls that Naira Marley gained prominence after he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and faced faced an 11-count charge linked to card fraud last year.

On February 2022, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) apprehended two of Naira Marley’s associates, Zinoleesky and Mohbad, during a late-night raid on their residence in Lagos.

Both artists gained fame through their collaborations with Naira Marley, featuring in his songs and music videos.

While Naira Marley himself wasn’t arrested during the raid, NDLEA confirmed the discovery of cannabis and Molly at their residence.

In a surprising turn, Naira Marley known for incorporating themes of drug use in his songs and videos, has now joined the campaign against drug abuse in the country.

The NDLEA Spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, said that Naira Marley visited the National Headquarters of the Agency and was warmly welcomed by the NDLEA Chairman/CEO, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd).

Femi Babafemi said the meeting aimed to discuss effective strategies to combat the pervasive issue of illicit drug use in Nigeria.

He tweeted, “Music star, Naira Marley in Abuja to declare support for the War Against Drug Abuse on Thursday 17th August 2023. Watch out for the video of his message to Marlians and Nigerian youths here tomorrow.”

In the video message, Naira Marley directly addressed his fans, referred to as ‘Marlians,’ and the broader Nigerian youth.

The music star emphasized the importance of abstaining from drugs due to their harmful impact on well-being.

“I will like to urge my fans the Marlians and all the Nigerian youths to stop doing drugs because it is not good for your wellbeing. Let us stop substance abuse in any form,” Naira Marley said in a video tweet by the agency.

“I have keyed into this campaign to support the NDLEA to stop drugs in the streets. Please, join us. It is really not good; it makes you go back into crime; it does a lot of things to you.”
