Alex Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North and South in Abia State, was caught on camera slapping and verbally attacking the e-hailing driver who had come to his residence to deliver a package.
Ikwechegh was seen refusing to retrieve the item himself, instead taking offense and accusing the driver of disrespect.
In the video, he threatened to make the driver “disappear” in Nigeria without consequence, even if the driver called the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.
In addition to withholding payment, Ikwechegh reportedly damaged the driver’s phone and clothing and further threatened to detain him in a generator room.
In a statement issued Monday, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that police had taken over the case, following the driver, Stephen Abuwatseya’s, report at the Maitama Police Division.
The police emphasized that public figures should not use the IGP’s name or office to intimidate others, as this undermines the core values of fairness and impartiality that the office represents.
The statement read, “The Nigeria Police Force is aware of the incident between a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, and Hon. Alexander Ikwegh, which took place on October 27, 2024, in Maitama, Abuja.
“The FCT Command is actively handling the case following Mr. Abuwatseya’s official report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters.
“The Police Force also urges the public to refrain from using the name or office of the Inspector-General of Police to intimidate others, as such actions undermine the values of impartiality that the IGP’s office upholds.”
