“Your Papa No Be Army” – Portable Diss Asake In New Song Over Grammy Loss [Video]

Nigerian singer, Portable has taken shots at his colleague Asake in a newly teased diss track, mocking his recent Grammy loss and the outfit he wore to the event.

At the 67th Grammy Awards, Asake lost out in the Best African Music Performance category, which was won by Tems.  Other nominees included Yemi Alade’s “Tomorrow”, Chris Brown’s “Sensational” featuring Davido and Lojay, and Burna Boy’s “Higher.”

Following the event, Portable shared a snippet of his diss track on Instagram on February 4, 2025, targeting Asake’s choice of wearing a camouflage outfit to the ceremony.

In the song, he ridiculed Asake, saying, “You wore an army uniform to receive a Grammy, your papa no be army. You wanted to win a Grammy but they didn’t give you one.”

The “Spider-Man” crooner also expressed frustration over Asake losing to a female artist, claiming that if he had been nominated, he wouldn’t have let that happen.

Portable’s song further criticized the idea that appearances matter in winning awards.

He stated, “The Grammy Award is not the end of the world; my glory will vanquish my enemies. The Grammy Award has become something that even dogs and animals aspire to win. Your father was not in the army, yet you went ahead and wore their uniform.

“It’s not determined by appearance because appearance doesn’t make one a tout. Your father was not in the army, and you want to win a Grammy. You better go and join the academy, Mr Money. I’m reigning; you people don’t have grace or reign. I resemble Lil Wayne in my appearance.”

The singer also called out Asake, Davido, and other top artists for allegedly sidelining and neglecting their fellow musicians, making it harder for them to succeed.

This isn’t the first time Portable has publicly clashed with industry heavyweights. In June 2024, he was involved in an online feud with Davido after a heated exchange over career advice and a potential song collaboration.

The disagreement reportedly started after they met in Atlanta during Portable’s U.S. tour.

In his diss track, he also boasted about his own rise in the industry despite lacking the backing of major figures.

“With their hundred billion instances of ignoring, sidelining, or disappointing someone, they can’t win a Grammy Award. You can drive a Ferrari, and the streets will hail you.

“Failure isn’t an option for me, and that’s why I am wise. Their song tops the chart, yet they can’t win a Grammy Award. I don’t have a backup, yet I’m surpassing them”, he sang in the diss track.

According to Portable, the Grammys should be reserved for truly deserving artists like himself rather than those who, in his words, “lack glory.”
