Nigerian Police Reintroduce Digital Tinted Glass Permit System

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has restarted the process of issuing Tinted Glass Permits (TGP) across the country through a new, easy-to-use online platform at possap.gov.ng.

The police spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi explained that this decision was made after many complaints from the public about police harassment of drivers with tinted windows.

He said the system was created to make the process of getting permits more transparent and straightforward for people with factory-installed tinted glass on their vehicles.

Adejobi noted that as more cars are built with tinted windows, it’s important to have a system that allows for legitimate use while still ensuring safety.

“With modern automobiles increasingly manufactured with tinted windows it has become essential to provide a standardised system that accommodates legitimate use while ensuring public safety,” the statement reads.

“Vehicles have often been exploited for criminal purposes, including kidnapping, armed robbery, ‘one-chance’ scams, and other forms of banditry. Their use hampers police visibility and impedes effective law enforcement, thereby contributing to public insecurity.”

He said the reactivation of this permit system aims to help the police identify people who have a valid reason for tinted windows, such as medical needs or security personnel, while also preventing misuse by criminals.

Adejobi added that the move is expected to improve law enforcement efforts and strengthen national security.

He emphasized that an applicants can now apply for their permits online, and the system will verify their identity through their National Identification Number (NIN), Tax Identification Number (TIN), as well as biometric data and background checks.

According to him, the permits will be issued digitally with QR codes, and the process should take no more than 72 hours.

The spokesperson said a 30-day grace period will begin on May 1, giving motorists time to comply with the new rules. After this period, the police will begin enforcing the regulations.

He warned that officers caught acting unprofessionally, such as extorting or harassing drivers, will face strict disciplinary actions.
