It was a heartbreaking scene in the Zike community of Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau State, as 51 people killed in a recent violent attack were laid to rest.
The emotional burial ceremony was filled with tears and grief, as families and neighbors mourned their loved ones.
The attack happened early Monday when armed men stormed the village, opened fire randomly, and left dozens dead.
Sadly, such brutal attacks have become all too common in the region.
During the funeral, community members shared their pain and frustration.
A local leader, Davidson Malison, described the situation as deeply upsetting and said some victims were still unaccounted for.
“I can tell you the situation is very disheartening. We are still searching for more corpses. Something needs to be done to put an end to this,” Davidson said.
For Mary Dikwa, a women leader in the Irigwe community, the ongoing violence has pushed people to their limits.
She said, “They have been killing us in this our community, and several times, they will come and attack us.
“They have been coming and killing, killing us every time. We are tired of this killing. Enough is enough. Our children are dying, our husbands are dying. Our crops have been razed down by this herdsmen.”
Monday’s massacre happened despite previous government assurances, and it occurred just days after another deadly incident in the area claimed over 50 lives and left many injured.
Reacting to the latest tragedy, President Bola Tinubu ordered security forces to hunt down those behind the violence.
He described the attacks as devastating and said the cycle of revenge and bloodshed must end.
