Take It Back Movement Begins Protest In Lagos And Abuja Despite Police Warning [Photos]

The Take It Back (TIB) movement has begun nationwide protests to express frustration over the use of the cybercrime law and the recent emergency declaration in Rivers State.

On Monday morning, demonstrators wearing their signature orange berets gathered under the Ikeja Bridge in Lagos.

The protesters marched through the area, chanting slogans and singing songs of protest.

Similar demonstrations were also reported in Abuja and Rivers State.

In Rivers, security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowds.

Critics have long argued that the cybercrime law contains vague language that is often used to silence government critics, journalists, and everyday citizens who share opinions online.

Juwon Sanyaolu, the group’s national coordinator, said the protest is calling for two main things including the repeal of the cybercrime law and an end to the emergency rule in Rivers, which they say resembles a military-style dictatorship under President Bola Tinubu.

The Nigeria Police had earlier advised the group to cancel the protest and consider talking with relevant authorities instead.

Still, the protesters went ahead, even as the demonstration coincided with National Police Day on April 7.

Back in March, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State and suspended Governor Sim Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the state assembly for six months.
