As the world observes International Press Freedom Day, Nigeria-based media advocacy group Akuko Foundation has added its voice to the growing global call to end the harassment, arbitrary detention, and silencing of journalists.

In a statement released Wednesday, the Foundation expressed solidarity with media professionals worldwide who risk their lives and liberty in pursuit of truth. It also condemned the rising wave of hostility and repression faced by journalists, particularly in Nigeria and other politically unstable regions.

“Across many countries—Nigeria included—journalists continue to be targeted simply for doing their jobs,” the statement reads. “From unlawful arrests to intimidation, smear campaigns, and restrictions on access to public information, these acts not only endanger lives but weaken democracy itself.”

Akuko Foundation opines that journalism is not a crime but a critical pillar of democratic society. “A free and independent press is essential for holding power to account, exposing corruption, informing the public, and upholding human rights. When journalists are attacked, society suffers.”

The organization urged governments and law enforcement bodies to honor international commitments to protect press freedom, ensure due process, and hold perpetrators of media repression accountable. It also called on public institutions in government, business, and civil society to welcome transparency and journalistic scrutiny as a vital part of democratic governance.

Akuko Foundation is known for its advocacy work, including capacity-building programs for journalists, campaigns to enhance access to public information, and policy efforts aimed at safeguarding the media landscape.

“As we work toward securing foundational support, we will continue to engage with media platforms to strengthen visibility and amplify the voice of independent journalism,” the statement concludes.

Founded to promote ethical journalism and press freedom, Akuko Foundation says it remains committed to defending media rights and empowering the next generation of storytellers.
