Court To Deliver Judgment On Natasha Akpoti’s Suspension From Senate June 27

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has set June 27 to give her judgment on the case filed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who is challenging her suspension from the Senate.

The Kogi Central lawmaker took legal action against her suspension, which was ordered by the Senate under the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The suspension was linked to allegations of misconduct and bias involving one of the parties in the case.

In her suit, Natasha Akpoti listed the National Assembly, the Senate, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Senator Neda Imasuen—Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct—as defendants.

The case, which was originally assigned to Justice Obiorah Egwuatu, was transferred to Justice Nyako after Egwuatu stepped away from it.

When the matter came up on Monday, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s lawyer, Jibrin Okutekpa (SAN), told the court that they had submitted all necessary documents, as earlier directed.

Lawyers for the Senate and the Senate President, Paul Daudu (SAN) and Ekwo Ejembi, also confirmed they had submitted their own documents.

However, they raised an issue, accusing Natasha Akpoti of ignoring a previous court order.

They claimed that on March 27, Natasha mocked the Senate President by posting a sarcastic apology on Facebook and publishing it in national newspapers, despite a court order advising against such actions.

In response, the senator’s other lawyer, Michael Numan (SAN), said the alleged apology had nothing to do with his client and that she shouldn’t be held responsible for it.

He also reminded the court that they had earlier filed a motion accusing the defendants of disobeying court orders.

Justice Nyako is expected to deliver her ruling on June 27.

KanyiDaily recalls that Godswill Akpabio recently asked the Federal High Court in Abuja to order Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to take down a satirical apology she posted on social media.
