The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed why it arrested well-known activist and social media figure, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).
KanyiDaily recalls that VeryDarkMan was arrested on Friday, May 2 at a GTBank branch in Abuja, where he went to complain about a suspicious deduction from his mother’s account.
Speaking with BBC News Pidgin on Monday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale said the arrest was based on multiple complaints filed by different persons against the activist.
“We arrested him to respond to a series of allegations raised against him by some petitioners,” Oyewale explained.
When asked if the complaints were related to GTBank, he said they were not and that the petitions came from different sources.
He also noted that the EFCC has a responsibility to protect the identity of those who filed the complaints.
He added, “We will release him once he meets the bail conditions, and we will take the case to court as soon as possible. We are law-abiding.”
Oyewale confirmed that VDM was arrested in Abuja, shortly after he had visited the bank with his mother to make an inquiry about her account.
Meanwhile, a group of young Nigerians staged a peaceful protest in Abuja on Monday, calling for the immediate release of VeryDarkMan (VDM).
