Nigerian social media personality, Martins Vincent Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan was arrested in Abuja on Friday, allegedly after calling out Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank).
It was gathered that VeryDarkMan was arrested by the police following his public criticism of GTBank for making suspicious withdrawals from his mother’s account.
His lawyer, Barrister Deji Adeyanju, confirmed the arrest in a post on Twitter, saying police officers arrested VeryDarkMan at Area 3 in Abuja.
According to him, the arrest happened while VeryDarkMan and his mother were at a GTBank branch trying to get answers about the unauthorized deductions.
“JUST IN: VDM arrested by the police at GTB. Spoke to them before he was arrested. This is absolutely unacceptable. Demanding accountability is not a crime,” Adeyanju wrote.
In a follow-up update, he added that VeryDarkMan was arrested along with a friend identified as C Park, though his mother was not detained.
Adeyanju wrote, “A team of policemen arrested VDM at GTB. He was arrested with his friend C Park but they left his mom alone.”
At the time of filing this report, the police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have not responded or given details about the arrest.
VeryDarkMan had earlier gone on social media to share that several debits had been made from his mother’s GTBank account, allegedly for loan repayments she never applied for.
The activist posted a video showing his visit to the bank, where he and his mother requested her bank statement to trace the suspicious transactions.
According to him, there had been at least seven separate deductions this year alone for loans they claim were never taken.
GTBank has not issued any statement regarding the incident.
This comes a few days after VeryDarkMan slammed the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for demanding an apology from him.
