Naira Abuse: Tompolo Is Not Above The Law, He Has Questions To Answer – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said it will take action against ex-militant leader Chief Government Ekpemupolo, better known as Tompolo, over allegations of Naira abuse.

A video that recently made the rounds on social media showed Tompolo dancing at what was reportedly his 54th birthday celebration in April.

In the video, a man can be seen throwing ₦1,000 notes in the air while Tompolo, dressed in white and red, dances nearby—a practice that violates Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) rules.

The video sparked backlash online, with many Nigerians demanding that the EFCC step in, accusing the commission of selective Naira abuse enforcement.

Reacting to the public pressure, the EFCC emphasized that nobody is above the law and that Tompolo would be required to answer questions over what happened.

“Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer!,” the EFCC said in a post shared on its official social media platforms on Monday.

Under Section 21(3) of the CBN Act, 2007 (as amended), spraying or dancing on naira notes at events is considered abuse of the currency. Offenders can face fines, jail time, or both.
