Niger Government Shuts Down IBB University After Protest Over Student’s Death

Niger State Government has shut down Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, after a student was killed in a violent incident that triggered widespread protest in the campus.

The closure comes in response to the death of Abdulwahab Jafar, a second-year Chemistry student who was reportedly attacked during a robbery at a student lodge known as “Ndakitabu.”

Following Jafar’s death on Monday morning, students took to the streets, damaged school facilities, and blocked roads, calling for justice and better protection for students.

Authorities from the university and the state government had been trying to ease tensions, and lawmakers from the State House of Assembly even visited the campus to assess the situation.

Governor Umaru Bago has now ordered the school to close immediately, with no date yet set for reopening.

A statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, said the decision was necessary due to rising security threats around the university.

The safety and security of all citizens, particularly students and staff, is of utmost priority to the Niger State Government,” the statement read.

“We are deeply saddened by the unfortunate events, and immediate action is being taken to address the situation.”

The government urged everyone on campus to remain calm and cooperate with security officers during this time.

It also promised to restore peace and conduct a full investigation into the killing and the unrest, noting that those found responsible will be brought to justice.

We remain resolute in our commitment to upholding law and order and to safeguarding the lives and property of all residents in Niger State,” the statement added.

KanyiDaily recalls that Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) recently ordered the immediate closure of two female student hostels in Kano over immoral activities.
