Soludo Appoints Abia-born Joachim Achor as Accountant-General of Anambra State

Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State has appointed Mr. Joachim Achor, a native of Abia State, as the new Accountant-General of Anambra State.

The announcement, made through the Governor’s Press Secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime, stated that the appointment followed a rigorous, merit-based selection process that included computer-based tests, screening exercises, and final interviews conducted personally by Governor Soludo.

Originally from Abia State, Mr. Achor has spent the bulk of his professional life in Anambra. He first arrived in the state as a student of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, and later served in Anambra during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year. His performance earned him the NYSC State Merit Award as the best corps member of his batch.

Impressed by his conduct and service, the then-military administration offered him automatic employment in the Anambra State Civil Service. Over the years, Achor rose through the ranks, serving as Director and Permanent Secretary before his latest elevation to Accountant-General.

Governor Soludo’s appointment of a non-indigene to one of the state’s top civil service positions signals a major shift in governance philosophy, prioritising competence and national inclusion over ethnic considerations.

“This administration is committed to building a competent, inclusive, and forward-thinking public service,” Mr. Aburime said. “Talent will not be ignored because of state of origin. These appointments reflect Governor Soludo’s determination to institutionalise merit and national unity in governance.”

The appointment of Joachim Achor comes months after the governor also named Mr. Adebayo Ojeyinka, a native of Osun State, as a Permanent Secretary, further reinforcing his administration’s pan-Nigerian approach to recruitment into strategic roles.

In his reaction, Mr. Achor expressed gratitude to Governor Soludo and the people of Anambra State, describing the appointment as a “deeply humbling” recognition of service.

“I am grateful to Governor Soludo for believing in merit above all else,” Achor said. “I thank the good people of Anambra for the trust and camaraderie they have shown me over the years. It has been a privilege to serve this state.”

Observers have described the appointment as a bold statement of reform and a step toward a more inclusive civil service model in Nigeria; one that values professionalism over ethnic boundaries.
