Five Nigerian women suspected of being sex workers have been arrested by the police in Ghana.

It was gathered that the women were arrested with seven Ghanian men during a police operation aimed at curbing criminal activities in the Asokwa Municipality, located in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.

The arrests took place during a surprise security raid led by the Asokwa District Police on Tuesday, July 30, 2025.

Officers targeted known ghettos in an effort to catch suspected criminals before they could act.

A total of twelve people including seven men and five women were picked up during the operation.

The five women later admitted to police that they were involved in prostitution to make ends meet.

The arrested women were identified as Empress David (22), Sonia Isaac (24), Loveth Michael (18), Success Moses (21), and Victor Alice (23).

On 30/7/25, between the hours of 1800 and 2000, the Asokwa District Command embarked on swoop exercise within Asokwa Municipality. That during the exercise 12 people were arrested,” the police statement read.

“Five of the suspects are female Nigerians who admitted having been engaging in prostitution at Sokoban Wood Village,” adding that all the suspects are in police custody.

“The seven males, who were also nabbed are Jacob Amaliba, 30, Usif Awuro, 39, Adu Kofi, 22, Kwame Atobiga, 39, Isaac Boamah, 27, Emmanuel Boakye, 29, and Pekazine Puakan, 28.”

The police statement added that “the seven males were also arrested from various ghettos suspected to be ‘Wee’ Base at Asago.”

Police said they searched the suspects but found no illegal items.

All twelve individuals are currently in custody, and further investigation is ongoing.

Police said the suspects will be screened and profiled as part of the process.

This comes a few days after Senator Bassey Aniekan condemned recent protests in Ghana where some citizens called for Nigerians to be deported.
