The National Council of State has approved the nomination of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The announcement was made on Thursday in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Assistant to the President on Information and Strategy.
According to him, President Bola Tinubu presented Joash Amupitan’s name to replace Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure as INEC Chairman ran from 2015 to October 2025.
The statement noted that the Council unanimously backed the nomination, with Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo describing Amupitan as a man of integrity.
It also confirmed that President Tinubu will forward Amupitan’s name to the Senate for confirmation in line with constitutional requirements.
This comes barely 48 hours after Mahmood Yakubu handed over INEC leadership to May Agbamuche as the Acting National Chairman.
